Dear Resident,

As you are probably aware there is a major development proposal in Billericay including the building of up to 500 houses with Social Housing provision on Burstead Golf Course, Wiggins Lane, Second Avenue, Frithwood Lane and adjacent arable land. This in turn will cause a rippling effect which will have a profound impact on Tye Common Road, London Road, Western Road, and the Mountnessing Road catchment areas.

There are additional proposals involving the relocation and/or expansion of the local football club, the building of a local teenage centre, a hospice, and the extension of the golf course with a golf academy.

The local landowners proposing this development and your council have been guarded in unveiling the full extent of the overall plan, but it is clear that the impacts will extend beyond the above, including substantial increases in:

• local traffic and parking issues;

• demands on existing Infrastructure, including the already overstretched rail, school, medical, dental, and police services;

• access roads with noise, light and pollution implications.

There will also be a permanent loss of open space and biodiversity. Any South Billericay ring or access road would cut through the heart of an area of green belt adjacent to the Conservation Area established by Basildon Council over 20 years ago.

These plans will irreversibly change the lives of all local people and their children.

After talks with Independent Planning Consultants, Basildon District Council has confirmed that since recent changes to green belt law, and as part of the new Local Development Framework (LDF), these proposals could be viewed favourably by Government.

The landowners’ proposals are under consideration by Basildon Council. They expect to decide upon which sites and formulate a core LDF strategy document by March 2008 – next month. Time is short. This, by necessity, will be a long campaign, with critical pinch points when we must act. The first of these is now.

Clearly there are alternatives to this community and green belt devastation. We must ensure Basildon District Planning Department makes the correct decision.

Attached are sample letters to John Baron MP, and two local Councillors directly responsible to, and involved with the planning process. Please help in preventing Billericay’s open spaces from becoming the first casualty of the Council’s need to meet the government’s housing targets. Please use these letters to express your support NOW.

We would also ask, to help us keep track of support and to keep you informed that you use the attached slip to confirm your letters have been sent.

Thank you for your support.
